Variants and groups

Products are sold as variants: one row per concrete combination of options, typically a size. The Variants tab of the product editor has a generation panel on top, the table of existing variants below, and the product's Group at the bottom.

The axes you generate variants from, such as size, come from the product's attribute set, where they're marked as variant axes. See Attribute sets.

Generate variants

Steps

  1. Open a saved product and click the Variants tab.
  2. Under Variant axes, tick the values that apply to this product on each axis, for example the sizes it actually comes in.
  3. Optional: click Set as primary on the axis that matters most. It shows Primary axis.
  4. Click Generate variants.

Nucleo creates one variant per combination of the ticked values and keeps every variant that already exists, so you can generate again after adding a size without creating duplicates. Generation happens immediately, without waiting for Save.

Tip
On the size axis, the sizes this kind of product actually uses come first. Click +… more sizes to see the rest, and Show only the … in use to hide them again.
Note
If the tab says This set has no variant axes, mark an axis in Attribute sets first.

Edit SKUs, barcodes and stock

The variants table has one row per variant, with its SKU, its Barcodes and its Available stock. The footer gives the number of variants and the total available.

Steps

  1. In the Variants tab, find the variant in the table.
  2. Edit its SKU or its Available stock in place. Stock is a whole number.
  3. To change its barcodes, click the Barcodes cell of the variant, or Edit barcodes above the table to edit every variant at once. See Edit barcodes.
  4. Click Save in the Unsaved changes bar to save every edited row at once.

Stock entered here is written to your default location. To see stock by location, open Inventory; to change the default location, see Locations.

Note
If your company has no locations yet, the Available field is read-only.

Edit barcodes

As in Shopify, a variant can have several codes, each with its type. The first one is the primary: it's the one shown in the table, with +1 or more when there are others.

Steps

  1. In the Variants tab, click the Barcodes cell of a variant, or Edit barcodes above the table.
  2. In Edit barcodes, type each Barcode and pick its Type: Custom, EAN, UPC, GTIN, ISBN, ASIN, or one of your company's own code types.
  3. Click Add barcode for another code, or the remove icon to delete one.
  4. Click Done. The changes stay in the product until you save.
  5. Click Save in the Unsaved changes bar.
TypeFormat checked
EAN8 or 13 digits, with a valid check digit.
UPC12 digits.
GTIN8, 12, 13 or 14 digits.
ISBNA valid ISBN.
ASIN10 letters or digits.
Custom and your own typesAny code.

A code of a type marked One product per code, such as an EAN, can't be used by two products. Your own code types are managed in Code types.

Note
On a Shopify connection, the variant's primary EAN, UPC, GTIN, ISBN or ASIN is the code meant for the Shopify barcode. See Manage a connection.

Delete a variant

Steps

  1. In the Variants tab, click the delete icon of the variant.
  2. Confirm with Delete.
Caution
The variant and any stock tied to it are removed immediately. This can't be undone.

Understand how variant SKUs are built

New variant SKUs start from the product's SKU followed by the value of each axis, joined and cased according to the Variant SKU pattern of your workspace. For example, with a hyphen separator and uppercase, product JKT01 in size m gets JKT01-M.

Owners and admins set the pattern in Catalog > Settings > Catalog data > Attribute sets. See Set the variant SKU pattern.

Define the product's group

The Group panel answers a different question from variants: which other products are the same item in another color or drop. A group is defined by a Match rule, and the list of matching products updates live as you edit it. When the product has a model code, the rule starts as Model code is that code, so every color of the same model belongs to the group. Without a model code, the rule starts empty.

Steps

  1. In the Variants tab, scroll to Group.
  2. Under Match rule, pick a Field, an Operator and a value for each condition.
  3. If you have several conditions, choose whether all of them must match (AND) or any of them (OR).
  4. Check Products in this group. If it says No product matches — loosen the conditions above., relax a condition.
  5. Click Save in the Unsaved changes bar.

Considerations for variants and groups

  • Variants describe the product's structure, so they're always edited on Global. On a channel view the Variants tab is read-only.
  • Variant prices live in price lists: expand a product in a price list to price its sizes one by one. See Price lists.
  • Variants usually arrive with a product import, one row per variant. See Importing data.
