Categories

Categories are the tree your customers browse. In Catalog > Catalog > Categories you manage the whole tree: a searchable explorer on the left, with the number of products in each category, and the editor of the selected category on the right, with its Status and its Image in the right column.

A category gets its products in two ways that combine: products you pick one by one, and smart rules that add every product matching conditions on its data.

A parent category also includes the products of its subcategories. The tree shows both numbers, its own products and the total with subcategories, a search filter on the parent finds them all, and the editor lists them under From subcategories, read only: you change them in the subcategories. Merchandising order is set per category and isn't inherited.

Add a category or a subcategory

Steps

  1. In Nucleo, go to Catalog > Catalog > Categories.
  2. Do one of the following:
    1. Click Add category in the page header.
    2. In the tree, open the actions menu of a category and click Add subcategory.
  3. Enter the Name. If a category with the same name already exists, Nucleo warns you; you can still create it.
  4. Under Parent category, keep the one suggested or pick another. Pick Top level (root) for a first-level category.
  5. Click Create category.

Find a category in the tree

Type in Search categories… above the tree. The tree expands the branches that match, so you never have to dig. Click Clear filter to see the whole tree again, and use the button next to the search to Expand all or Collapse all.

Edit a category

Steps

  1. In the tree, click the category.
  2. In the Info tab, edit the Name and the Description, the customer-facing intro shown on the category page.
  3. Optional: pick a Google category. It prefills every product in the category; a product can still pick its own in its Categories tab.
  4. Optional: fill in the SEO fields: meta title, meta description and URL slug. See SEO.
  5. In the Status card on the right, pick Active or Draft.
  6. Click Save in the Unsaved changes bar.

Add a category image

The category image is the hero of the category page, sent to the channels that support it.

Steps

  1. In Nucleo, go to Catalog > Catalog > Categories and click the category.
  2. In the Image card on the right, click Add image and pick a JPEG, PNG or WebP file, up to 10 MB.

The image is saved at once, without the Save button. To change it, click Replace; to take it away, click Remove and confirm with Remove image. You can upload a new one at any time.

Add products to a category

Steps

  1. In the tree, click the category and then click the Products tab.
  2. Do one or both of the following:
    1. Under Manual picks, click Add products, search by product or SKU, tick the products and click Add.
    2. Turn on Smart rules and build the conditions. The number next to it shows how many products match now.
  3. If you changed the smart rules, click Save in the Unsaved changes bar.

In this category lists the products from both methods; the Source column says Manual or Rule. To take a hand-picked product out, click Remove on its row. Products added by a rule leave when they stop matching.

Tip
A smart rule combines conditions on product data, such as category, attributes, status or SKU, with AND and OR in nested groups. New products that match join the category on their own.
Note
You can also add products to a category from the product list, with the bulk Category action, or from a product's Categories tab. See Change many products at once.

Assign a product to categories

Steps

  1. Open a saved product and click the Categories tab.
  2. Tick one or more categories in the tree. Where Atomo has a suggestion, it appears with the reason.
  3. Optional: pick the product's Google category, used by the Google feed and shopping channels.
  4. Click Save in the Unsaved changes bar.

Move or delete a category

Steps

  1. In the tree, open the actions menu of the category.
  2. Do one of the following:
    1. Click Move…, choose the New parent, and click Move category. The category keeps its subcategories.
    2. Click Delete, and then confirm with Delete category.

You can also delete the selected category with Delete category at the bottom of its editor. Deleting from the tree tells you in the confirmation how many products will be unassigned.

Caution
Deleting a category removes it with its channel overrides, and unassigns the products in it. It can't be undone. A category that still has subcategories can't be deleted: move or delete them first.
Note
A category can't be moved under itself or under one of its own subcategories.

Adapt a category per channel or language

The tree is shared by every channel; its content can differ. Use View as in the top bar:

  • Pick a sales channel to edit what that channel shows. The name, URL slug, description, meta title, meta description, status and smart rules can be overridden. Changed fields are marked Override; click Save override in the Unsaved changes bar to keep them, and Reset to Global, then confirm, to drop every override of the channel.
  • Pick a language to translate the name, the description and the SEO fields. The default-language text shows as a placeholder until you translate; click Save translation in the Unsaved changes bar. The Products tab and the right column aren't shown in a language view.
