Attributes

Attributes are what filters, site search, feeds and channels read to understand your products. The Attributes list shows every attribute with its Type, how many Values it has, whether it's Required (the Scope column) and how many sets it's Used in. Search it by name or code, and click a column header to sort.

To open it, go to Catalog > Settings > Catalog data, and then click the Attributes tab.

Types of attribute

The type decides how a product picks a value for the attribute:

TypeWhat it doesOn the product
DropdownA single pick from a list of values.A drop-down field.
Multi-selectSeveral values per product.A grid of chips you toggle.
SwatchColored tiles, for colors and finishes.A grid of color swatches.
TextFree-form short copy.A text field.
NumberA numeric value, such as a capacity.A number field.
BooleanAn on/off flag.A switch.

Add an attribute

Steps

  1. In Nucleo, go to Catalog > Settings > Catalog data, and then click the Attributes tab.
  2. Click Add attribute.
  3. Under Identity, enter the Name, for example Size (EU). The Code fills in from the name, for example size_eu; change it if you need to, using lowercase letters, numbers and underscores.
  4. Optional: turn on Required if every product that uses the attribute must have a value, and Visible in product page to show it in the product's Info tab.
  5. Under Type, pick one of the six types.
  6. For Dropdown, Multi-select and Swatch, click Add value under Values and fill in each value.
  7. Click Create attribute in the Unsaved changes bar. The bar appears once the name and the code are valid.

The attribute opens, ready to be added to an attribute set. Until then it doesn't show on any product. See Attribute sets.

Caution
The code and the type can't be changed once the attribute exists, because products already reference them. Choose them carefully.
Tip
You can also create an attribute on the spot while mapping the columns of an import. See Importing data.

Manage an attribute's values

For Dropdown, Multi-select and Swatch attributes, the Values card is a grid with one row per value and one column per language.

Steps

  1. In the Attributes list, click the attribute.
  2. Under Values, do any of the following:
    1. To add a value, click Add value and fill in its Code and its label in each language.
    2. To translate a value, type its label in the column of each language.
    3. For a Swatch, pick the color of each value.
    4. To change the order in which values are offered, drag a row by its handle.
    5. To remove a value, click Delete value on its row.
  3. Click Save in the Unsaved changes bar.

Codes, order and swatch colors are shared by every language; each language column edits only that language's label.

Tip
Editors can add a new value to Brand, Product type and similar lists straight from the product editor, by typing it in the field. The value is added to the attribute for everyone.

Make an attribute required or visible on the product page

SettingWhat it does
RequiredEvery product that uses the attribute must pick a value. Required attributes are marked with an asterisk in the product editor, show Required — no value yet while empty, and weigh most in the completeness score. Saving a product with empty required attributes is allowed, with a warning.
Visible in product pageShows the attribute, such as Brand, as a field on the product's Info tab.

Both switches are in the Identity card of the attribute. Click Save in the Unsaved changes bar after changing them.

Work with system attributes

Some attributes, marked System, are built into the platform and present on every product regardless of its attribute set, such as Brand or the Compliance & customs fields. Their code and type are locked and they can't be deleted.

Admins see a System card on these attributes with two switches: System attribute, and Editable by store owners and editors. When the second is on, your team manages the option list, as with Brand; when it's off, the values are fixed and read-only.

See where an attribute is used

Open an attribute and scroll to Usage. It says how many sets reference the attribute and how many products they span, lists the sets with their number of products, and marks the sets where it's a Variant axis. Click a set to go to the Attribute sets tab.

Delete an attribute

Steps

  1. Open the attribute.
  2. Click More actions > Delete, and then confirm with Delete attribute.
Caution
Every product value stored for the attribute is removed permanently. This can't be undone.
Note
An attribute that is still in an attribute set can't be deleted, and Delete is off: remove it from its sets first. System attributes can't be deleted.

See where a product's value comes from

In the product's Attributes tab, a short line under an attribute tells you where its value came from, when Nucleo knows:

LineMeaning
written by handTyped by a person on the product record.
from an importCame in from a file.
copiedCopied when the product was duplicated from another one.
confirmedApproved by a person in the Enrichment queue.
read automatically, to reviewProposed by an automatic reading, such as a photo, and not yet confirmed by a person.

Values with no recorded origin carry no line; a note at the bottom of the tab says how many there are.
