Recommendation widgets

A widget is one set of recommendation rules: how many items to show, which products may appear next to the one being viewed, what to pin or leave out, and which products it applies to. You can have several widgets of each logic, for example one for the whole catalog and a stricter one for a single collection.

Widgets live in Catalog > Recommendations > Widgets. You need the Owner, Admin or Editor role to create or change them.

Read the widgets list

ColumnWhat it shows
NameThe widget's name.
StatusActive if it answers on the products it's assigned to, Inactive if it's off.
LogicComparison or Correlation.
AssignmentWhole catalog, the number of categories or chosen products, or Filter.
ProductsHow many products the widget covers. A widget that covers none shows touches no product.

Use the search box to find a widget by name, and the filters to show only one Logic, Assignment or Status. Click a row to open the widget.

Create a widget

Steps

  1. In Nucleo, go to Catalog > Recommendations > Widgets.
  2. Click New widget.
  3. In General information, choose the Logic: Comparison or Correlation. You can choose it only when creating the widget.
  4. In Name, type the name you'll find the widget by in the list.
  5. Set the rules. See Set a widget's rules.
  6. Optional: pin or exclude products. See Pin or exclude products.
  7. In Assignment, choose what the widget applies to. See Assign a widget.
  8. In Status, on the right, choose Active or Inactive.
  9. Click Create in the Unsaved changes bar. To give up, click Discard: you go back to the list.

The Summary on the right recaps the widget as you build it. Products covered is computed when you save.

Set a widget's rules

The Rules panel decides how many items the widget shows and which products can appear next to the one being viewed.

FieldLogicWhat it does
How many itemsBothThe number of items to show, from 1 to 24. Leave it empty to use the catalog default.
Conditions against the viewed productBothConditions on attributes, compared with the product being viewed. See below.
Push cheaper products to the bottomComparisonA percentage of the viewed product's price, from 0 to 100: anything cheaper goes last. It's never hidden.
Pair with these categoriesCorrelationThe categories the complements come from. Leave it empty to let Nucleo choose them.

Conditions against the viewed product

Click Add condition, pick an attribute, and then choose an operator:

OperatorWhat it keeps
same as the viewed productProducts with the same value, such as the same gender.
different from the viewed productProducts with another value, such as another color.
is one ofProducts with one of the values you pick.
is notProducts without the values you pick.

Between conditions, click the connector to switch between AND and OR. Click Add subgroup to group conditions together.

Pin or exclude products

In Pinned and excluded products:

  • Pinned first: products shown first, in the order you add them, as long as they're in stock. Up to 24.
  • Never shown: products that never appear in this widget. Up to 200.

Click Add a product, then type a name or SKU in Search a product… to find it. An exclusion always wins over a pin.

Assign a widget

In Assignment, Applies to decides which products the widget answers on:

OptionWhat it covers
Whole catalogEvery product.
CategoryThe categories you add with Add a category, with all their child categories.
FilterThe products that match a filter, built like the rules of smart categories.
Product listUp to 500 products you pick.

When several widgets of the same logic cover a product, the most specific wins: chosen products, then a filter, then categories, then the whole catalog. A widget that isn't Whole catalog needs at least one category, product or filter condition before you can save it.

Preview a widget while you edit

Steps

  1. In the widget, find Preview on the right.
  2. Click Pick a product and choose one.

The preview follows your unsaved rules and shows how many suggestions the widget returns for that product. With these rules the widget suggests nothing for this product means the rules are too strict for it.

Choose the Shopify destination

In Shopify destination, choose the product metafield that will receive the items:

OptionWhat it means
Search & Discovery standardThe metafield that the Related products block of Shopify themes already reads.
An existing metafieldA metafield of your own: type its Namespace and Key.
A dedicated Nucleo metafieldA metafield Nucleo will create: type its Key.
Note
For now the destination is only chosen: Nucleo doesn't write to your store yet.

Activate, edit or delete widgets

To change one widget, open it from the list, make your changes, and click Save in the Unsaved changes bar. Discard goes back to the saved version. To switch it on or off, change its Status.

To change several at once:

  1. In Nucleo, go to Catalog > Recommendations > Widgets.
  2. Select the widgets with their checkboxes. The bar shows how many are selected; open it to select every widget on the page or to clear the selection.
  3. Do one of the following:
    1. Click Activate or Deactivate.
    2. Click Delete, and then confirm.

To delete one widget from its page, open the More actions menu, click Delete widget, and confirm.

Caution
Deleting a widget can't be undone. The products it was assigned to go back to the next widget that covers them, or to the whole-catalog widget.

Considerations for widgets

  • An Inactive widget doesn't answer: its products use the next widget that covers them.
  • Out-of-stock products never appear as comparison alternatives.
  • A shopper's past purchases never remove a product from the suggestions: people buy again what they like.
  • For one product, you can also set exceptions in the product editor: open the product, click the Discovery tab, and use This product's exceptions in the Recommendations card. Products marked Hand-picked are the only ones shown for that product, in your order. See The Discovery tab.
  • Widgets need a connected store: they're a catalog's own configuration.
