Search settings
The settings that apply to every search live in Catalog > Settings > Search: open Settings at the bottom of the left rail and click Search in the panel. The page has four tabs: Attributes, Ranking (the order of results and what happens to out-of-stock products), Redirects (queries sent straight to a page) and Installations (the storefront connections).
Read the ranking order
Steps
- In Nucleo, go to Catalog > Settings > Search > Ranking.
- Read the Ranking order panel. The order is fixed and marked Not configurable.
| Criterion | What it means |
|---|---|
| Relevance tier | Exact, then Strong, then Weak. A lower tier never outranks a higher one. |
| Product boost | Top, then Featured, then Normal. Every product has the normal boost today. |
| Availability | In stock, then low stock, then out of stock, following the out-of-stock setting below. |
| Popularity | The commercial score built from the product's own figures. |
The setting Boost can lift a weaker tier is fixed to no. For the details, see How results are ordered.
Choose what happens to out-of-stock products
Keeping out-of-stock products usually suits a shop whose sizes come back: a shopper who finds the item sold out returns, one who doesn't find it thinks you don't sell it. Hiding them suits a catalog with many products that won't come back.
Steps
- In Nucleo, go to Catalog > Settings > Search > Ranking.
- In Products with no stock, select one of:
- Keep them, at the bottom (the default)
- Hide them from results
The setting saves at once and applies to every search. A message confirms it. If the setting can't be read, the selector is disabled and shows Not connected.
Add a redirect
A redirect sends a query straight to a page or a category instead of a list of results, for example gift card to your gift card page, or sale to your Sale category. Redirects are checked on the normalized query before anything else.
Steps
- In Nucleo, go to Catalog > Settings > Search > Redirects.
- Click Add redirect.
- In Query, type the search text.
- In Match, select:
- Exact to react only to that exact query.
- Starts with to react to every query that begins with it.
- In Target, select URL or Category, and then fill in the field next to it:
- For a URL, type the Path of a page of your site, such as
/pages/shipping, or a full address starting withhttps://. - For a category, type the category name, such as
Sale.
- For a URL, type the Path of a page of your site, such as
- In Channel, keep All channels, or select Shopify to limit the redirect to that channel.
- Click Add redirect.
Search for the query in the Playground: instead of results, you see Redirect and the target.
Edit a redirect
Steps
- In Nucleo, go to Catalog > Settings > Search > Redirects.
- Click the redirect's row. Use Search query or target to find it.
- Change the query, the match, the target or the channel.
- Click Save changes. The button stays off until something has changed.
Remove a redirect
Steps
- In Nucleo, go to Catalog > Settings > Search > Redirects.
- On the redirect, click the trash icon.
- Click Delete redirect to confirm.
The redirect stops applying immediately: searching for the query shows results again.
Read the redirects list
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Query | The search text and how it's matched. |
| Target | Category or URL, and where it points. |
| Channel | All channels, or the one channel it applies to. |
| Hits · 30 d | How many searches in the last 30 days the redirect answered. |
Click Query, Target or Hits · 30 d in the header to sort the list.
Considerations for search settings
- You can also create a redirect from Queries: the Add redirect fix opens the form filled in.
- A redirect wins over synonyms and matching: once it fires, the query isn't searched.
- The Installations tab is covered in Event tracking.
- Synonyms and facets aren't here: they have their own pages under Catalog > Search.
- You need the Owner, Admin or Editor role to change the out-of-stock setting and redirects. With the Viewer role you can read them.
